Background and Set Information
The original Enterprise main engineering set was built at Desilu Studios and included forced perspective elements to simulate distant power conduits.
In early episodes, engineering was depicted as an abandoned or low-activity area, later revised to be a busy hub of the ship.
The engineering set was occasionally redressed for other uses, such as a theater or computer center.
The Galaxy-class engineering set was reused and repainted across various Star Trek productions and featured the central console affectionately known as the “pool table.”
NX-Class Engineering Details
The NX-class engine room was designed to look cramped and functional, inspired by nuclear submarines. Lighting originally planned to be heavily red was toned down for practicality. The design included walkways and a focus on large tanks containing deuterium and antimatter. Multiple floors allowed control from both levels, and set dressings included detailed blinking lights and pipes.
Elevators servicing multiple decks and functional control panels contributed to a realistic operational space.
Alternate Reality Engineering Info
Alternate reality engineering rooms were filmed at a Budweiser brewery and featured 20th-century construction elements such as riveted steel girders and hoist tracks, contrasting with other futuristic technologies in the film.
